The steel city is all set to host the 10th Senior (Men and Women) State Handball Championship to be held at Ram Das Bhatta Community Centre ground in Bistupur from November 12 to 14.
Handballers from different districts will be participating in the event which is being organised by Jharkhand State Handball Association (JSHA). The previous senior state championship was held in the city in 2019.
"So far we have received 10 (men team) and eight (women team) district entries. The number of entries will increase by late Saturday evening," said JSHA secretary Khurshid Khan.
According to him, the performance of the handballers will be the yardstick for the selection of the state squad for two national championships which are scheduled at Sirsa (Haryana) and Jalgaon (Maharashtra) in November and December, respectively.
"All the Covid-19 guidelines would be followed during the state championship. We are looking forward to an efficient and hassle-free event. Different sub-committees would be shortly formed," Khan added.
The state association has 21 affiliated units and serious efforts are being made to promote the game across Jharkhand. Jamshedpur has a rich handball culture. Tata Steel sports wing runs a handball training centre at JRD Tata Sports Complex. Several handballers from the cradle have landed employment in the armed forces and railways.
Junior and senior handball championships have also been organised in steel city earlier.
