The municipal corporation here is mulling distribution of gift coupons among citizens who segregate wet and dry garbage at home.

Mayor Asha Lakra on Monday said the incentive would be launched in two of the 53 wards on an experimental basis before being extended to other areas. She, however, did not disclose which wards would pilot the scheme.

“Our prize coupons will allow winners to shop in malls and designated stores on discount. It will be given to those who separate trash before handing it over to RMC workers,” she said.

Technically, dry garbage comprise used paper, plastic bottles and glass items that can be recycled for revenue. Wet garbage is primarily food leftovers and other biodegradable trash, which can be dumped in Jhiri or used to produce manure.

“Since segregation on doorstep can boost our revenue, we will like to share our profit in the form of prize coupons with diligent citizens. We also plan to connect with start-ups to ensure proper implementation of the scheme,” Lakra added.

Renu Singh, a homemaker from Upper Bazaar, sounded excited. “Gift coupons will motivate many to segregate waste and facilitate proper recycling. The RMC is doing a good thing,” she said.

Anwar Ahmed, a social worker in Hindpiri, said the move could reduce the need for rag-pickers who are mostly children. “This one step can do the society a great deal of good. The scheme should cover all the 53 wards,” he added.
