Clicking selfies on the picturesque Domuhani bridge in Sonari will not be risky anymore.

Acting on the directive of East Singhbhum deputy commissioner Amit Kumar, Jusco has started to install a welded mesh on the median of the 252-metre long bridge.

“The mesh is being erected in view of the safety of visitors who sometimes climb on to the median of the bridge (nearly a metre in width) to click selfies. The mesh will prevent someone from falling into the river through the gap in the median,” executive engineer in Jusco’s road construction department (Jamshedpur division) N. Sahay said.

In February 2018, 13-year-old Mohammed Tanzir, a resident of Azadnagar, died after falling into the river while clicking a selfie on the bridge.

Jusco sources said the installation of the mesh will be completed before the end of this month. “It is being done at a cost of nearly Rs 10 lakh. This apart, we have installed street lights along the bridge, which will be used by a huge number of heavy vehicles carrying industrial goods to the city,” a source in Jusco said.

Chief minister Raghubar Das inaugurated the four-lane road linking Domuhani (in Sonari) and Kanderbera (in Chandil) comprising 7.10km approach road and the 252-metre bridge at a cost of Rs 141.82 crore on March 7.

The bridge will boast a 8.5 metre carriageway and a 1.5 metre pathway along with a 1 metre median. It can be used by heavy vehicles to reach industrial units in Adityapur and Gamharia from Jamshedpur via Marine Drive.
