Frequent traffic snarls on the Sakchi stretch between Jamshedpur Eye Hospital and the JNAC office roundabout will be over by the end of this year.

The first phase of the nearly Rs 1.5-crore traffic redesigning plan for the Sakchi-Kalimati Road stretch will be completed within the next fortnight in the form of two new double-lane roads (each 7.5 metres wide) connecting Golmuri-Burmamines with Bistupur and Golmuri-Burmamines with Sakchi, Kadma and Sonari.

“After the completion of two double-lane one way roads, commuters from Golmuri, Burmamines and Telco can reach Bistupur using one of the double-lane roads via Graduate School College for Women. Similarly, commuters from Golmuri, Burmamines and Telco can reach Sakchi, Kadma and Sonari using the other double-lane road,” a senior official in Jusco’s town engineering wing said.

He said the idea was to bifurcate traffic from Golmuri, Burmamines and Telco and reduce the load by nearly 40 per cent on Sakchi roundabout.

At present, commuters from the densely populated Golmuri, Burmamines and Telco reach Bistupur and Sakchi via Sakchi roundabout, leading to frequent congestion on Sakchi-Kalimati Road near Jamshedpur Eye Hospital and Sakchi traffic island.

“Once these one-way roads are complete, only vehicles coming from Sakchi- Bistupur end and going towards Golmuri, Burmamines and Telco will use the existing route,” a senior Jusco official said. Pedestrian pathways will be developed along all the roads.

In the second phase, which is set to complete in a year, there are plans for separate cycle track, storm drains and parking areas along the roads.

Jusco spokesperson Rajesh Rajan said, “We are executing the project of Tata Steel as part of road redesigning and widening plan, which began a few years back and aims at streamlining traffic management and reduce road mishaps in the city.”

Commuters are already heaving a sigh of relief.

“We have already started using the new roads. It has not only reduced the time taken to reach office , but has also lowered accident risks,” Sunil Singh, a Golmuri-based bank official who rides a car to his Bistupur officer, said.

The Sakchi Jamshedpur Eye Hospital stretch witnesses over a lakh vehicles daily. It links the eastern part of the city (Agrico, Sitaramdera, Sidhgora, Baridih, Birsanagar, Golmuri, Burmamines and Telco) with northern parts (Bistupur, Northern Town, Circuit House, Sonari and Kadma).
