The railways is in the process of installing additional 22 closed-circuit television cameras at Tatanagar station to improve security-related logistics.
The additional surveillance cameras will be installed at the railway parking, the new overbridge and at some other points, which are far from the range of the existing cameras.
There are 103 CCTV cameras across Tatanagar station, 48 of them were installed in 2014, bringing down criminal incidents such as pickpockets striking at will, chain and mobile snatching, luggage lifting and assault.
Railway Protection Force (RPF) inspector, Tatanagar, M.K. Sahoo, said: “Though the 103 surveillance cameras including four pan-tilt-zoom cameras are placed at strategic locations, the railway parking and the new overbridge don’t come under their purview. This is why we have recommended 22 additional cameras for installation at the Tatanagar station,” said Sahoo.
The RPF inspector said there are half-a-dozen CCTV cameras already at the parking area but the cameras belong to parking contractors who have installed them to avoid confrontations between parking staff and vehicle owners.
“But once the recommendation for the additional 22 high resolution cameras gets the nod from South Eastern Railway headquarters in Garden Reach, Calcutta, the cameras installed by the parking contractors will be removed,” said Sahoo.
The RPF inspector said that the CCTV cameras are installed by signal and light department of the railways and the recommendation for the additional 22 surveillance cameras were made after the RPF, which maintains security at the railway stations, carried out a meticulous survey.
Ever since the Tatanagar station was provided with surveillance cameras, safety of passengers has increased considerably.
Though criminal incidents such as cellphone thefts and luggage lifting continue, such cases are negligible and that too are ultimately detected by the railway police through CCTV cameras.
