Paramedical staff donate blood amidst unprecedented blood crisis

Over 200 registered Thalassemia patients have been suffering due to shortage of blood

Service to humanity has no boundaries and altogether six paramedical students presently undergoing training at Sahid Nirmal Mahto Memorial College Hospital (SNMMCH) today proved the fact as came to rescue of patients suffering at the hospital amidst unprecedented blood crisis at its blood bank.

The students, including Prashant Kumar (19), Rajkumar Modi (21), Ruquiya Khatoon (21), Sumaiya Naaz (21), Ruchi Kumari (22) and Amit Kumar (18) who donated blood volunteered on their own after getting information about the difficulties faced by patients.

Notably, the hospital, which serves patients of six other adjoining districts besides Dhanbad, including Govindpur, Jamtara, Pakur, Sahibganj, Godda and Chatra is facing acute blood crisis due to lack of blood donation campus for over a week.

Worst affected section from the blood crisis are over 200 registered Thalassemia patients of these districts who are coming to the hospital every day for blood transfusion but returning back due to lack of sufficient stock.

Notably, the daily requirement of the hospital is around 65 to 70 units of blood but as the stock of blood bank, which serves as the main blood bank of these district dipped to as low as 20 yesterday the patients are facing difficulty.

Talking to The Telegraph Online, Rajkumar Modi, a para medical student who is underground training for lab technician at the hospital and donated O +Ve blood at hospital said, “Though we are serving the patients in hospital since the last three months as part of the training but when we came to know about the blood crisis we volunteered to donate blood.”

“The satisfaction felt by us after donating blood is beyond reward for us,” added Modi. Ruquiya Khatoon another paramedical student who also donated AB +Ve blood said, “As the AB +Ve is considered one of the rarest blood group and large number of Thalassemia patients were returning since a couple of days due to blood crisis so I felt I quite satisfied after donating blood.”

In Charge of Blood Bank of SNMMCH , Dr AK Singh added, “We appreciate the initiative taken by the paramedical students and at the same time appeal to various blood donor organizations to organize blood donation camps to help the students.”

He, however, expressed hope that the crisis will soon be over as a large number of organizations, including Bank More Chamber of Commerce, IIT (ISM) and Bengali Welfare Society have decided to hold camps on February 26, February 27 and March 8 respectively.
