Daltonganj: After nearly four years or so a rebel of a banned outfit on Sunday surrendered to cops and civil officers in Daltonganj.

The last surrender of any rebel was that of the CPI Maoist Israel a fake name which he wore till the day of his surrender.

The police team comprised DIG police Palamu R K Lakra, DC Shashi Ranjan SP Chandan kr Sinha and additional SP K Vijay Shankar.

The sub zonal commander of the banned rebel outfit the JJMP (Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishes) Bhavani Bhuiyan alias Bhagirithi surrendered with 1 Insas rifle, 3 magzines, 83 rounds of fire, 36 high explosive grenades, camping equipment and pouches for the ammunition etc said the SP Palamu Chandan kr Sinha.

The rebel has only 5 cases against him spreading over the two adjoining districts Palamau and Garhwa.

The SP said the man has no bounty on his head from the state Home department but as he surrendered with Insas rifle he was given a cheque of rupees one lakh today.

Bhagirithi said he had no looted Insas rifle with him rather his outfit gave him which he laid down with ammunition.

On being questioned as to why he left extremism, he said he saw a dead future for him and his family and trusted police like anything and police did keep its word as it didn't bump him off as he was made by others to fear like anything.

He said there are still 40 cadres in the JJMP loaded with Ak 56 and Ak 46.

Elephants kill man at Gomia

Dhanbad: A herd of elephants roaming through different parts of the remote Gomia Block of Bokaro trampled to death a man identified as Prasadi Ganjhu (21) a resident of Badhtalwa village of Lodhi Panchayat on Saturday.

Ganjhu had gone to the adjoining forest on Saturday to gather dry wood to be used for bonfire.

One elephant which strayed from the herd spotted him and attacked him due to which he died on the spot.

The elephant also attacked a women after killing Ganjhu but he somehow saved his life by running away from the spot.

Local ranger Shankar Paswan who reached the hospital immediately where the post mortem of Ganjhu was performed provided a cheques of Rs 25 thousand to dependents of the deceased out of a compensation of Rs 4 lakh as first instalment.

Meanwhile the elephant herd also damaged eight houses in Gose Chhotki village under Siyari Panchayat of Gomia Block and spoiled several quintiles of foodgrains besides potato lying in the field.

Local villagers said that the herd reached the village at midnight and damaged the wall of the storeroom of one of the muddy house and damaged the foodgrains lying in the store room.

A team of torchmem of forest department which reached at site in the wee hours somehow whisked away the herd.
