The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has sought action taken report from Jharkhand chief secretary and director-general of police on the investigation of the 2019 cases about alleged sexual abuse of minors and selling of children from institutions managed by the Missionaries of Charity.

NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo in its letter on Friday to chief secretary L. Khiangte and DGP Anurag Gupta reminded about the summons to the deputy commissioner and superintendent of police of Dumka district regarding an inquiry of the commission to alleged trafficking and illegal selling of children from Nirmal Hriday Centre, an institution managed by the Missionaries of Charity in Ranchi.

The letter reminds that the commission’s officials had visited Dumka on August 30, 2019, and the child welfare committee Dumka had provided statements of two victims of sexual abuse. The letter said: “It was found that the victims in their statement specifically mentioned that they were sexually abused and in spite of statements of the victims being available on record, no action was taken by the office of the district administration and police of Ranchi and Dumka under the provisions of Pocso Act 2012”.

“Further... it was informed that 13 other victims were recovered from Nirmal Hriday,” the letter states.

The NCPCR chairperson in the letter requests the chief secretary and DGP to issue directions for lodging of FIR under the provisions of the Pocso act in all the cases.
