Loot accused dies in police custody at Sahibganj; irate locals attack police station

The issue of custodial death was also raised in the state Assembly

Irate local residents protesting against the death of Debu Turi, a vehicle showroom loot accused in police custody at Taljhari area of Sahibganj attacked, the police station this noon.

Two policemen were seriously injured while six vehicles were damaged. Large number of policemen jointly led by Arvind Kumar Singh, Sub Divisional Police officer of Rajmahal and Pradeep Oraon, Sub Divisional Police officer of Badhadwa which reached the site fired tear gas shells and also made aerial firing and later admitted the injured policemen Charan Soren and Santosh Jha to local hospital for treatment.

Notably, the protest began this morning with large number of local residents first blocking Maharajpur-Taljhari-Sharmapur road near Jharna Tola locality of Taljhari demanding the arrest of policemen responsible for the death of Debu.

Arvind Kumar Singh while talking to the media, said, “Debu Turi was called for questioning in Taljhari police station on Thursday evening but his health condition deteriorated in the police station after which he was admitted to the local Community Health Centre (CHC) from where he was referred Sadar Hospital, Sahibganj but he died on way to the hospital”.

Anupama Hembrom, wife of deceased Debu Turi however alleged that his husband was tortured for four days from Monday to Thursday by the local police leading to his death and demanded strict action against the guilty policemen after conducting probe.

Anant Ojha, Rajmahal MLA of BJP meanwhile also raised the issue in the Jharkhand Assembly.
