IIT-ISM students on Sunday contributed to ending the blood crisis faced by Dhanbad residents at Sahid Nirmal Mahto Memorial Medical College and Hospital. They donated 450 units of blood during a camp organised at the institute under banner of the student society, Fast Forward India.
Yogesh Kumar an IIT-ISM student who also coordinated the blood donation camp said, "Though we have the target of donating 350 units of blood we crossed it by donating over 450 units while the camp is still under progress."
Notably, IIT-ISM and BIT Sindri are the main donors of the SNMMCH based blood bank of Dhanbad. As both of these institutions were lying closed during covid and students were away, the blood crisis developed in Dhanbad.
The worst victims of the crisis are over 200 thalassemia patients of Dhanbad and several adjoining districts registered at SNMMCH as they require periodic blood transfusion. Earlier, Bank More Chamber of Commerce, one of the 58 units of Federation of Dhanbad Zila Chamber of Commerce and Industry also organized a similar camp yesterday at its office in Bank More during which altogether 57 units of blood were donated.
