A silent procession by Muslims against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), which was scheduled on Thursday, was postponed because of what the organisers said was a police embargo.

According to sources, more than half-a-dozen Muslims have in a letter addressed to officer in-charge (OC) of Town police station said the silent procession had been postponed because “police prashashan ne rok laga diya hai”( the police administration has put an embargo).”

Confirming the receipt of the letter, OC Anand Kumar Mishra said no procession could be taken out without the permission of the sadar sub-divisional officer (SDO).

SDPO Sadar Sandip Kumar Gupta said Daltonganj police had held a meeting with select Muslims in the Town police station on Saturday and told them that a procession would have to be approved by the SDO.

“Those who took part in the meeting were told to furnish names and mobile numbers of all those people who would be either organising the procession or leading it so that they could be made accountable in case of any untoward situation,” he said.

Gupta said there was no embargo on procession, but due permission was must for the maintenance of communal amity and harmony.
