The sleuths of anti-corruption bureau (ACB) recovered Rs 2.45 crore from the house of junior engineer Suresh Prasad Verma at Anand Vihar Colony near Dimna Chowk in Mango on Friday evening.

Apart from such a huge amount, the ACB team along with the police have seized 100 grams of gold, papers related to five residential flats and plots of land in Jamshedpur and outside.

Verma, 42, who is posted in the rural development department, was nabbed by the ACB while he was taking a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a contractor for passing his bill in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, about 35km from here, on Thursday evening.

The ACB had taken Verma into custody and sealed his house suspecting that he might have hidden more cash there.

Deputy superintendent of police (ACB) Arvind Kumar Singh, who led the raid at Verma’s office in Seraikela on Thursday and his house in Mango on Friday, said Verma had already been arrested.

“The huge stash of cash that we have seized from the junior engineer’s house in Mango seems to be the bribe that he has taken from contractors. We will interrogate the accused and try to find out how he has been working for the department of rural development while accumulating so much money,” the DSP (ACB) told The Telegraph.

Singh said it was a big catch for them. “So much money has never been seized by our department from a single raid across the state,” he added.

Bribe cuffs

A team of CBI’s anti corruption wing arrested Provident Fund Commissioner-II Sandeep C. Toppo while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a staff of a private company at his office in Sakchi on Friday.
