Gym operators took to the streets in Ranchi on Thursday to protest against the state government’s decision to disallow operations till January 15 to curb the spread of Covid-19.
Over 35 operators, under the banner of Ranchi District Gym Association, assembled at Albert Ekka Chowk with banners and posters to denounce the state government’s decision to close their units, but allow establishments like saloons and restaurants to run.
Prabhat Singh, vice president of the association, said, “Usually, people go to gyms to stay fit. Fitness helps in beating disease. But in Jharkhand, the government believes that only gyms can spread disease. It is ironic but true given the way how it has always resorted to shutting down gyms for days and months since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020.”
Accusing the government of taking unscientific steps in the name of Covid control, Ayodhya Prasad Akela, treasurer of the association, questioned the logic behind the closure of gyms while allowing several other places, where the possibility of virus spread was more.
“For example, saloons are allowed to function but gyms are closed. Why can’t gyms run with proper safety precautions when restaurants, saloons, malls are functioning? The way the government has constantly attacked the fitness industry in this state, speaks volumes about it’s priorities,” he said.
Akela said all gyms and their operators were battling severe financial crisis and finding it difficult to sustain their families. “A minimum of 2000 sq feet area is required to set up a decent gym. This apart, steady power supply to run high-end equipment and manpower to train members are some of our basic requirements. All this leads to monthly expenses. But without earning, how can gyms sustain themselves?,” he asked.
