A Shramik Special train carrying 1,467 stranded migrant labourers and students from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, reached Bokaro station on Thursday morning.

Around 67 buses were stationed at the station to send these passengers to their home districts, said Bokaro deputy commissioner (DC) Mukesh Kumar.

The train reached Bokaro at 11am. The train’s passengers included labourers and students from 16 districts of Jharkhand, with the maximum number (469) being from Bokaro.

There were 33 passengers headed for Dhanbad district, 59 for Chatra, 33 for Deoghar, 23 for East Singhbhum, 43 for Garhwa, 195 for Giridih, 370 for Hazaribagh, 77 for Koderma, 43 for Latehar, 34 for Ramgarh, 36 for Ranchi district, four from Gumla, two from Seraikela-Kharsawan, and four for Jamtara.

The 24-coach train departed at 10pm on Tuesday from Kolhapur, Bokaro station superintendent K.K. Haldar said. A dozen medical teams were deployed for the screening of all the passengers.

“After medical examination, they were served food and sent to their respective districts by buses,” DC Mukesh Kumar said.

The seating arrangements in the buses was made keeping in mind social-distancing norms. Each bus plied with only half the number of persons it can accommodate, the DC pointed out.

This is the 10th such special train to reach Bokaro bringing back migrants stranded during the nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus.

A large number of officials, including additional collector Vijay Kumar Gupta and sub-divisional officer Chas Sashi Prakash Singh, were present at the station to welcome the passengers back in their home state.
