The municipal corporation on Thursday conducted a cleanliness drive in which it removed coal dust and sand deposited on both sides of the dividers on two recently constructed roads.

Aimed at the keeping the coal town roads clean and preventing accidents, the drive was undertaken on the 25.71km stretch between Bank Mor and Sindri and 5.5km stretch between City Centre and Barwaddah.

As many as 85 labourers began sweeping the roads around 6am under the supervision of two sanitary inspectors and continued the work till 9am.

Dhanbad Municipal Commissioner Chandramohan Kashyap, who himself inspected both the roads, said: “The dirt, sand and coal dust lying beside the dividers on both the roads were not only posing safety threats, but also giving a clumsy look to the town. We have directed the sanitation supervisors to ensure regular cleaning of the roads.”

Kashyap said almost half of the sand and coal dust piled up on the roads had been removed.
