Getting a mainstream Bollywood playback break has been quite a wait for Birsanagar boy Arun Dev Yadav, 30, but it was worth it.

Arun has sung Para Para for Balaji Motion Pictures’ upcoming flick Judgementall Hai Kya, picturised on Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao. The quirky and peppy number, composed by Rachita Arora, was released on Wednesday with an interesting narrative of Bobby, Kangana’s character, desperately stalking Keshav, played by Rajkummar.

Billed as a dark comedy, Judgementall Hai Kya will release on July 26.

Though Arun had sung for some lesser known movies in the past five years, this was the big break he was waiting for, he told this paper from Mumbai.

“I have been waiting for this day and finally it has come. I have struggled a lot but now have found a platform. My only wish is to sing and take music forward and contribute to the (film) industry. I am thankful to Rachita Arora, who’s very talented,” he added.

Born to a middleclass home — his father Bhuvaneshwar Prasad Yadav is now a retired sports teacher and mother Kusum a homemaker — Arun, an alumnus of Vidya Bharati Chinmaya Vidyalaya and Jamshedpur Co-operative College, has been singing since childhood. His teachers in Jamshedpur were Anjan Das and Kavita Biswas. He completed his training from the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad, Calcutta.

Arun left for Mumbai in 2015 to pursue a career in music. Arun was also in a reality show on Mahua channel in 2012 and recently composed a song on Jamshedpur on JN Tata’s 180th birth anniversary.

He did not have it easy, he added. For five times, Arun had tried to make it to Indian Idol, a much-hyped musical reality show, and for another three times, to SaReGaMaPa, another high-octane talent hunt. Every time, he couldn’t make it to the “theatre round”. But he didn’t lose hope and went on doing his riyaaz.

He candidly said he did not have a godfather in Mumbai, so it took him a long time to make contacts. “I used to literally find out the telephone numbers of studios from their websites jot them out,” he said. “Today I am happy. There are some more offers that I am looking forward to.”

Any favourite playback singers? “Actually, there’s something to learn from every playback singer. But my all-time favourite singers are Mohammad Rafi and Michael Jackson,” he said. Any dream song? Arun does not hesitate. “To sing for A.R. Rahman some day.”
