Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Manoj Verma indicated on Monday that there were credible intelligence inputs about attempts by miscreants to incite chaos during the protest. The government has imposed prohibitory orders near Nabanna (the state secretariat) under Section 163 of the BNSS, restricting gatherings of five or more people.
The Calcutta high court on Friday had granted permission for the rally.

A sizable crowd gathered around College square in Kolkata as the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ protest march began.The police tried to prevent protesters from College Square from crossing the Vidyasagar Setu. The police set up barricades at Turf View Road, Hastings, Furlong Gate, and Kidderpore Road.

Police lathi-charged and used water cannons and tear gas to disperse protestors who threw stones and bricks at the security forces and attempted to topple barricades blocking their way to the state secretariat.
A policeman, who identified himself as the in-charge of Chanditala police station in Howrah Police Commissionerate, was injured in the clash.

Police on lathi-charged, used water cannons and tear gas to disperse agitators at Howrah Bridge's Kolkata end and near Santragachhi Railway station on Kona Expressway as protestors attempted to break through police barricades in an effort to reach the state secretariat, Nabanna.
At Santragachhi, agitators threw bricks at police, injuring several officers, while protestors claimed that police action also injured several students.

The protestors were attempting to reach the state secretariat to demand the removal of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
