R Madhavan, Babil Khan, Kay Kay Menon and Divyenndu play a group of unsung heroes who managed to save thousands of lives during the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy in the teaser of Netflix and Yash Raj Film’s four-episode series The Railway Men.
The one-minute-23-second-long teaser follows the course of a single night when a gas leak at a chemical factory in old Bhopal
caused the world’s biggest industrial disaster. It goes on to showcase how four Indian Railways employees — Central Railways GM (Madhavan), a stationmaster (Menon), a police constable (Divyenndu) and the only loco pilot present at the station (Babil) — risked their own lives to save thousands of people.
Beginning with scenes just before the gas leak, the teaser shows workers at the factory recognising the situation and running frantically to keep it under control. Then a voiceover narrates the incident, setting the grim tone of the series. The video then shows civilians trying to cover their noses to protect themselves from the poisonous gas before cutting to the introduction of the four characters who take matters into their own hands. It goes on to depict Madhavan’s Rati Pandey and his team’s attempts to evacuate thousands of civilians from the city through trains.
The Bhopal gas tragedy took place on December 2 and 3 in 1984 when a gas leak at the city’s Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant exposed over 500,000 people to extremely toxic methyl isocyanate.
Directed by Shiv Rawail, the thriller series is slated to release on Netflix on November 18.
