Diabetes is a major health complication that Indian patients suffer from. Currently, there are approximately 10 crore type 2 diabetes patients in India. 13 crore Indians are in the prediabetes stage, and might soon reach the stage of diabetes.

It is in this regard that The Telegraph online spoke to renowned Diabetologist Dr. Parthasarathi Mondal, who is currently a Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at H P Ghosh Hospital, Bidhannagar, Kolkata.

Dr. Mondal highlighted the lack of awareness about diabetes in patients and the complications that arise due to diabetes. He said, “About 50 per cent of patients do not know that they are diabetic. For 2/3rd of the patients, blood sugar is never controlled. Complications arising due to diabetes is another important aspect of this disease.”

Diabetes can affect the eyes, the kidneys, the heart, and other organs, Dr Mondal added. “Complications like diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and diabetic foot ulcer are very common. Diabetic patients are also at the risk of having a heart attack, stroke, kidney disease or heart failure. Diabetic foot ulcer is a big cause of amputation,” he noted.

Dr Mondal added, “For most patients, blood pressure and cholesterol levels are high. If not kept in check, heart attack, stroke, or kidney disease cannot be prevented.”

To keep diabetes and blood sugar levels in check, it is important to undergo regular screening and follow-up. So having all the facilities under one roof helps. Speaking on the importance of screening, Dr. Mondal said, “Regular screening and follow-up is imperative. Screening for complications is also essential. Complications do not aggravate if treated early. All these facilities are not available everywhere; Fortunately enough, HP Ghosh Hospital has a great diabetes care team.”

The diabetes care team at HP Ghosh Hospital comprises Consultant Diabetologists and Dieticians. Podiatrists, Cardiologists and Nephrologists are also there to support if complications arise.
