The onset of monsoon brings added concerns. This season leads to a surge in mosquito-borne illnesses. Dengue is the most prevalent and widespread of these diseases. While it is a viral disease like others, failure to receive timely treatment can lead to increased complications from dengue.
In a recent interview with Anandabazar Online, Dr. Subhadip Pal, Departmental Head of Internal Medicine at H.P. Ghosh Hospital, stated, “Due to the delayed onset of monsoon, we were all hopeful that the dengue outbreak would be milder this year. But this was not the case. This year, too, dengue has taken a severe form. Nevertheless, there are some misconceptions about dengue among the general public. Many believe that if one suffers with dengue, their platelet count will immediately drop and hospitalisation is necessary in that case. But this line of thinking is not entirely correct.”
Dr. Pal further added, “Dengue is a very common viral disease. By following the doctor's advice, dengue can be kept under control. Among the many symptoms of dengue, a decrease in platelet count is one of them. According to the statistics, the mortality rate from dengue has decreased significantly or is almost negligible compared to before.”
But does that mean dengue is completely safe? What are the symptoms when someone contracts dengue?

He elaborated, “There’s no need to panic and rush to the hospital as soon as one contracts dengue. Instead, one should immediately consult a doctor upon noticing the symptoms. Also, it's necessary to remember that while dengue is similar to other viral diseases, it can damage multiple organs in the body. Therefore, it's crucial to be cautious.”
