HP Ghosh Hospital of Kolkata has collaborated with The Spine Foundation to establish a state of the art spine institute in the city. The hospital started its journey in 2023 and has soon become a preferred name for the city people seeking healthcare.
The Telegraph online recently met Dr. Saumyajit Basu, a Senior Consultant of spine surgery at the spine foundation, who spoke about the collaboration. Dr. Basu said, “The objective of this collaboration is to establish a state-of-the-art spine institute in Kolkata, and aspires to be the best in the country.” HP Ghosh hospital has some of the latest equipment for spine surgery. Dr Basu said, “Very soon robots would be introduced, thereby pioneering robotic spine surgery in eastern India.”
Dr. Basu also discussed the need for spine surgery and debunked the myth about the risk factor attached to it.”People are usually apprehensive about spine surgery, but it is not a risky business. Only 1 out of 10 people need a spine surgery. Also, less than 10 percent of the surgical cases are risky”, he said.
People might wonder why a spine surgery is needed and whether it is possible to get back to normalcy after undergoing the surgery. Dr. Basu said that a spine surgery is undertaken to release pressure of the spinal nerves. The earlier it is done, the better. “Spine surgery is also common in children having scoliosis or kyphosis”, he added.
