A week-long ceasefire in the Gaza Strip collapsed on Friday morning after Israel said Hamas had fired rockets toward Israel in the hours before the truce was set to expire, and Israel responded with strikes on the territory.
International mediators said talks were continuing in the hopes of quickly reviving the truce. Hamas’ leadership did not comment on Israel’s announcement or its intentions. But Israel said it was now returning to its plan of forcing Hamas from power in Gaza, saying that Hamas had violated the ceasefire agreement by firing on Israel and failing to release as many hostages as it had promised.
In a statement, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said: “With the return to fighting, we emphasize: The government of Israel is committed to achieving the war aims — freeing our hostages, eliminating Hamas, and ensuring that Gaza will never again pose a threat to the residents of Israel.”
A week-long truce between Israel and Hamas expired at 7am (local time) on Friday. Mediators had attempted to extend it by at least one more day. But early on Friday, Israel’s military said on X that it had intercepted a projectile fired from Gaza. Minutes later, Israel said it was restarting operations in Gaza.
