An IndiGo flight from Bangkok to Varanasi was diverted to Calcutta on Sunday because of bad weather in Varanasi, officials said. Flight 6E 98, carrying 121 passengers, landed in Calcutta at 9.47am and flew to Varanasi later in the day, said airport officials.
Inspection tour
Mayor Firhad Hakim visited several parts of south Calcutta on Sunday to oversee the solid waste management situation in Calcutta. Sources in the civic body said that Hakim visited Chetla, Tollygunge, Southern Avenue and Lake Gardens.
81-yr-old found dead in flat
An elderly person was found dead in his flat in a five-storey building in Golf Green on Saturday evening, an officer of Jadavpur police station said. The body of Balasubramaniam Srinivasan, 81, had started decomposing. Police had to break open the door after being alerted by neighbours. No suicide has been found and a case of unnatural death has been started.
Building fire
A fire broke out on the ground floor of a three-storey abandoned building at 35D Rifle Range Road on Sunday evening. Two fire tenders doused the flames. No one was injured, police said.
Shanties gutted
Three shanties were gutted when a fire broke out in a slum under the Lock Gate flyover around 4.30pm on Sunday. Three fire tenders doused the flames in half an hour. No one was injured. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
Seminar at JU
The Centre for Studies in Cultural Diversity and Wellbeing at Jadavpur University will host a UGC-sponsored two-day international seminar titled Happiness in Global South: Buddha to Rabindranath on March 20 and 21. Day I of the seminar will be held at Gandhi Bhavan. The last day of the seminar will be held at Nazrul Bhavan Seminar Hall.
Cops stop suicide after alert online
A 30-year-old youth was saved from the brink of suicide after his friends alerted police that he was streaming live on a social media platform his wish to end his life.
A friend of the youth dialled 100 to alert police.
