The crater-ridden roads of Salt Lake have led several Durga Puja committees to complain to the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation.

With barely three weeks left for Puja, several organisers have either approached councillors or raised their concern with officials at the Poura Bhavan, the civic body headquarters, in Salt Lake about the state of roads.

An official of the corporation said Sabyasachi Dutta’s resignation from the post of mayor and the subsequent impasse in selecting his successor had affected the civic body’s road-repair programme.

The corporation has still not managed to file a comprehensive report on the state of roads under its jurisdiction. Deputy mayor and in-charge of roads, Tapas Chatterjee, said repairs would be carried out as soon as the rain stopped.

Roads in this block are not only riddled with potholes but also have concrete, bricks and even soil dumped on the side that make the carriageway narrower. The narrow pavements leave no space for pedestrians. At night, concrete dumped on the roads is a threat to both fast-moving cars and pedestrians. The road leads to the FD Puja pandal that draws large crowds.

Parts of Second Avenue near water tank number 9 are crying for repairs as the blacktop has given way to huge craters.

“I had to get the front suspension system and the alloy wheel of my new car checked as I could not spot a large pothole at night and the front right wheel landed right inside with a thud despite me driving at a snail’s pace,” said Sandeep Agarwal, who drives a Honda Civic.

At least 50 large craters have developed on a 600m-long stretch of the Seventh Cross Road in Sector II. The road leads to the AJ Block Puja pandal from the Karunamoyee bus stand. This Durga Puja pandal draws one of the biggest crowds in Salt Lake.

Manojit Guha, a resident of AJ Block, said: “We are hopeful that the corporation will carry out repairs urgently.”

It is over three months that a water pipeline has been laid under the canal side road from AL Block till the Baisakhi footbridge but the road has not been repaired. The surface is uneven on both sides and the metal top is not wide enough even for autorickshaws. The AG Block’s Puja and Sarat Abasan’s Puja falls on the stretch.

The blacktop of a stretch of the Third Cross Road in front of the island number 4 has given away exposing the brickwork underneath. This has made the stretch extremely dangerous for vehicles as the bricks jut out and often take motorists by surprise.

The traffic police have placed a guardrail on a large pothole that has formed adjacent to the traffic island near the Calcutta Heart Clinic in HC Block to prevent motorists from driving over it.

“The pothole is so deep that wheels of even SUVs would get stuck here and cause an accident,” said the policeman.
