Siliguri Metropolitan Police are taking some initiatives to ensure the safety and security of people during the Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations in and around Siliguri.

As large crowds are expected to gather across the city and also in some locations on the outskirts, some measures would be implemented to maintain order and prevent any untoward incidents, police sources said.

“On December 24 and 25, as well as during the New Year’s Eve, we will ensure peace and order throughout the city. Our teams will conduct patrols throughout the night. Also, certain traffic restrictions will be implemented,” said C. Sudhakar, the commissioner of police of Siliguri.

Siliguri, which is known for its vibrant festive celebrations, witnesses heavy footfall in churches, streets, and nightlife establishments during this period.

“There are over 30 churches, both large and small, in and around the city which attract significant gatherings on Christmas Eve. To manage the crowd and to enhance surveillance, the police will utilise drones and CCTV cameras,” said a source.

In addition, all-night patrols will be conducted to ensure public safety. Pink mobile patrol vans (comprising all women teams) will be stationed at strategic points to bolster security, particularly in areas prone to congestion. There will be traffic restrictions in some locations on December 24, with measures such as one-way traffic in front of prominent churches to streamline movement and prevent disruptions.

Also, pubs, discotheques, nightclubs, and other nightlife venues will be under close scrutiny. Police teams will inspect these places to ensure adherence to permitted operational hours, the source added.

“The state excise department will give a specific time for the operations of the bars and pubs. We will take legal action against those who violate the rules. Establishments found flouting the regulations will also face legal consequences,” added Sudhakar.
