On this day, the front page of Amrita Bazar Patrika, a newspaper published from Calcutta, was full of reports of World War II from many places of Europe. A small report was about the Assam Governor congratulating the British king on his “providential escape”.
On September 13, Buckingham Palace had been hit by German bombs while King George VI and the Queen Mother were in residence.
On September 8, a 50kg bomb had been dropped on the palace grounds, but it did not explode. On September 13, a German raider dropped five bombs, two of which exploded. Three workmen were injured and several parts of the palace damaged.
“I am glad we have been bombed. It makes me feel I can look the East End in the face,” the Queen Mother said.
