On this day, the newspaper Bengal Hurkaru, published from Calcutta, reported the death of F. Carberry, superintendent of Bengal Military Orphan Press. He was crossing the river in a dinghy when his boat collided with the chain-cable of a steamer. Carberry and two of the three boatmen drowned.
The office of the superintendent of Orphan Press appears to have been an unfortunate one. The press was set up to support orphaned or deserted children of British soldiers in India. Its first superintendent was G.H. Huttmann, who lost his life soon after taking up the post. His successor, W. Ridsdale, suffered the same fate.
