Two schools are collecting data on how many pool cars come to their school and how many children avail of their services.
A third school has appointed a transport manager.
The changes are in keeping with a government advisory released in June that expects schools to check for the vehicles’ adherence to safety norms.
Mahadevi Birla World Academy has collected data of how many students are availing of the pool cars and how many owners or contractors are providing the service.
The school circulated a form to all parents asking for the required information.
In some cases, the vehicles are owned by one person but the contractor is another who runs the pool car, a school official said. The school needs to have all the information about the vehicle.
Sri Sri Academy is in the process of collecting data on the number of children who use the pool cars.
“There are multiple pool cars run by a contractor or an owner. So, we are collecting data on the number of vehicles and the routes they ply on,” said Gargi Banerjee, principal, Sri Sri Academy.
At Shri Shikshayatan School, after the government advisory, a transport manager has been appointed to keep a tab on the pool cars.
“We already had a count of the number of pool cars even before the government advisory. This was done because we disperse children from inside the campus and the details of pool cars have to be registered with the school,” said Sangeeta Tandon, principal, Shri Shikshayatan School.
“If a parent writes an email to the school regarding the vehicle condition or services, we intervene,” she said.
Most schools who run their own buses keep their responsibilities limited to the buses.
Since the pool car is an arrangement between the parents and the contractor, the schools had so far stayed out of it.
Pool cars are have met with accidents on the city’s roads out of sheer callousness or greed.
The government advisory expects schools to take more responsibility.
The convenience of a pool car is that children can be picked up and dropped off right in front of their houses. In most cases, for buses, parents would have to go to the nearest bus stop, which is on the main thoroughfare and not in the by-lanes of their homes.
Mahadevi Birla World Academy will form a regulatory body from among parents who avail of the pool car services for their children.
This body of parents will work in close coordination with the school transport manager.
“The next step is to form a parent body because we now know how many parents avail of the pool car services for the children,” said Anjana Saha, principal, Mahadevi Birla World Academy.
“The parents will be briefed about the safety norms and what are the things that they should check in the vehicle. The parents would see to it that the pool cars abide by the safety norms,” Saha said.
