The report states that the victim was bleeding from eyes, mouth and private parts. Injury marks were visible on the face, lips, neck, nails, stomach, right-hand ring finger, left leg and left leg ankle.

The report says the body of the 31-year-old was found in a half-naked condition, with a pink kurti and white upper garment lying on a blue mattress. A pair of jeans and an undergarment were found near the body. A hair clip was found near the private parts.

The blue mattress on which the body was found had many strands of hair and was soaked in blood.

The report does not mention the cause of the injuries and whether the victim had been sexually assaulted.

"This is definitely not a case of suicide; the woman was murdered following sexual assault," PTI quoted an unnamed Calcutta police officer as saying.

Two lady witnesses and the woman’s mother were present during the autopsy, which was conducted on-camera, according to the news agency.

PTI quoted another senior unnamed Calcutta police officer as saying that the crime took place between 3am and 6am.

"Her neck bone was also found broken. It seems that she was first strangulated and then smothered to death. We are waiting for the full report of the autopsy, which will help us identify the culprits," he told PTI.

On Friday evening the cops started a murder inquiry based on the preliminary findings.

The city police chief Vineet Goyal who had visited the hospital soon after the report of the death came in had told The Telegraph Metro last night that a special investigative team had been formed to investigate the case.

The family has lodged a complaint of rape and murder with the Tala police station.

The victim was on night duty on Thursday and had last spoken with her mother over the phone around 11.15 pm.

After going on the nightly rounds she had dinner with two other doctors junior to her. Around 2am, she retired to the seminar hall to rest for the remainder of the night. That was the last that she was seen alive. On Friday morning, two other doctors went to call her and found her body.

The seminal hall where she was found did not have any CCTV cameras installed.

Junior doctors at the 138-year-old RG Kar hospital went on a cease work demanding immediate arrest and capital punishment for the culprits along with better amenities and security for the student-doctors.

The junior doctors have complained that there are no resting rooms provided for the doctors on duty at night and they try to find any vacant spot available. Like the victim went to the seminar hall. There are no separate toilets for the female and male doctors either, they have said.
