The city police on Friday said they have summoned 60 people who were allegedly spreading rumours on social media about the rape and murder at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Two doctors who have spread information that the police suspect was incorrect will be summoned, a senior officer said.
Police commissioner Vineet Goyal said on Friday that there was a lot of rumour-mongering without any basis.
“Why this rumour-mongering is going on even now? Somebody said the police are the ones who informed the family about suicide. That is absolutely wrong. It was never the police. Somebody said 150g of semen had been found. I don’t know from where they found this kind of information. And it is circulating in the media of all forms.
People are now trying to believe it, they are trying to create confusion among the people,” Goyal said.
Sources said at least two doctors who shared wrong information on a public forum about the reported quantity of semen found on the victim’s body will be summoned.
The police said strict action would be taken against persons who would not be able to substantiate their claims on social media with evidence.
“The rumour-mongering has been damaging the investigation and could lead to law and order problems,” said an officer.
