“Special drives are conducted to prevent traffic violations during festive seasons when many motorists tend to break the traffic rules. We are maintaining strict vigil,” said an officer of the traffic department.

According to police records, 54,060 motorists were prosecuted for traffic violations between December 20 and December 24 evening.

Out of these, 8,817 motorists were prosecuted for signal violation, 5,023 two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets, 2,297 for speeding and 257 for drink driving.

The other violations include the use of mobile phones or earphones during driving, rash driving, no-entry violations and riding with excess pillion riders on two-wheelers.

The police said check posts have been created in some of the major intersections where vehicles are being stopped for checking of drink driving.

An officer said the same pattern of the special drive of prosecution will continue till the festivities are over.
