The students of the journalism and mass communication department at Jadavpur University on Monday afternoon put a lock on the door of a former head of the department, alleging lapses in the evaluation of answer scripts.

The former head of the department, Santwan Chattopadhyay, and an assistant professor of the department, Abhishek Das, who sit in the same room, were not there when the door was locked.

The protesting students alleged that papers of the first- and second-semester exams were allegedly not evaluated while awarding marks.

The students alleged Das and Chattopadhyay were responsible for the lapses. They also accused Chattopadhyay of not taking classes.

“Marks are being awarded without any evaluation of the scripts. Most scripts of the internal exams are not checked. These teachers are playing with the future of the students. We want the university to suspend these teachers on charges of dereliction of duty,” said Sagir Piyada, one of the protesting students.

Last week, JU showcaused Das over the alleged lapses. On Monday, the university showcaused Chattopadhyay.

“I will not speak to the media about this. Whatever I have to say, I will tell the university authorities,” said Das.

Chattopadhyay said: “I have performed my duties dutifully. I want the university authorities to look into the allegations thoroughly. I am not aware of any showcause notice.”

Calls and messages to JU vice-chancellor Bhaskar Gupta went unanswered.
