The sergeant has been admitted to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital with injuries.

Police have arrested one person after identifying him among the group of attackers.

The arrested person has been identified as Bubai Hazra, 27, a resident of Tangra.

A separate case of a police officer being prevented from performing duty has been lodged with Tangra police station.

The police said a night naka check was being conducted in the Tangra area on Tuesday night to prevent drunken driving.

Guard rails were set up on Christopher Road, and vehicles were made to slow down and the officers asked drivers to show their documents.

“A few two wheeler drivers were spotted speeding down and one of them was intercepted and asked to show papers. Suddenly, the driver and the pillion rider got off the motorcycle and attacked the traffic sergeant,” said a senior police officer.

“As our men tried to resist the attackers, a few others gathered at the spot
and smashed the windshield of a police vehicle. The traffic sergeant, a constable and a civic volunteer were injured.”

Some bystanders told the police that the number of persons who gathered at the spot grew to around 15-20 within a few minutes.

Some of them even threatened to set the motorcycle of the sergeant on fire.

The assault on the traffic sergeant took place near a traffic police kiosk on Christopher Road.

Additional police reinforcement from Tiljala police station reached the spot to bring the situation under control.

Traffic sergeants switched their bodycams when the group kept threatening the officers on duty.

“The additional force that reached the spot managed to remove the crowd and bring the situation under control,” the officer said.

“The sergeant was removed to the hospital and the area was cordoned off.”

Police officers said the CCTV footage from the spot was being scanned to identify some of the others involved in the attack.

“We hope to make further arrests shortly,” the officer said.
