Several rounds were fired in Babughat following a dispute over payment between lorry drivers and a group of men from Karaya early on Monday.
A lorry driver, identified as Kanti Singh, suffered a bullet injury and has been admitted to SSKM Hospital.
Two men have been arrested in this connection and a search is on for a third accused, the police said.
The site where bullets were fired is behind Eden Gardens on Strand Road.
According to the police, a group from Karaya struck a deal with a sand dealer in Babughat to send a truckload. The sand was to be delivered to a construction site near Kohinoor Market in Topsia on Sunday night.
“The deal was struck over the telephone. The sand dealer and the buyer agreed to an amount of ₹33,000. The dealer sent the consignment to the site and the driver was briefed to receive the amount,” said a senior police officer.
After the truck reached the site, the buyer allegedly refused to pay the amount, the police said. Instead, he offered to pay ₹28,000.
“The driver called the sand dealer who asked him to return to Babughat with the sand,” an officer said.
“After the driver left, a group of men followed him,” the officer said.
“Some of those who followed the truck were later identified as Tinku, Arif, Asif and Danish,” the officer said.
After reaching Babughat, the men picked up a fight with the lorry driver. Soon, other lorry drivers joined in.
Tinku allegedly whipped out a gun and fired several rounds. One of the bullets hit Kanti in the leg, the police said quoting onlookers.
The lorry drivers then attacked the group and thrashed at least two of them, the police said.
Police teams from North Port and Maidan police stations reached the spot and arrested Asif and Arif.
A search is on for Tinku.
“A case under the arms act and attempt to murder was drawn up at Maidan police station. An investigation has been initiated,” a police officer said.
