Jalpaiguri superintendent of police Abbhishek Modi was transferred as deputy commissioner at Jadavpur in Calcutta on Thursday.

He was shifted two days after around 30 BJP supporters had been served rice and mutton for lunch at Kotwali police station here.

They were arrested and brought to the police station for holding a demonstration seeking a proper probe into the unnatural death of Hemtabad MLA Debendra Nath Roy.

Pradip Kumar Yadav, an IPS officer who is now the commandant of an armed battalion of state police at Barrackpore, will be the new Jalpaiguri district police chief .

The fact that the feast at the police station did not go down well with the ruling establishment became clear as Modi is the second police officer to have been transferred in less than 48 hours. On Wednesday, Biswasroy Sarkar, the inspector-in-charge of Kotwali police station, was instructed to join immediately in the post of the court inspector at Contai in East Midnapore.

Bipul Sinha, an inspector posted in the district enforcement branch in South Dinajpur, will join as the new IC of Kotwali police station.

The lunch was seen as an attempt by certain police officers to curry favour with the BJP.
