The Election Commission of India on Monday sought a detailed report from the district magistrate of North 24-Parganas after Trinamul MP Abhishek Banerjee had complained that “false and unverified” charges were levelled at him and his family.
“We have sought a factual report from the district election officer, who is the district magistrate of North 24-Parganas, on the matter. We are looking at the social media angle as well,” said Sanjay Basu, additional chief electoral officer of West Bengal.
Sources in the commission said Abhishek’s lawyer had sent the complaint.
Opposition parties, including the BJP, had alleged that Abhishek’s wife and her sister had prevented customs officials from searching her baggage on her arrival at the city airport on a Thai Airways flight on March 16 night. They also alleged that customs officers had found unauthorised gold weighing 2kg in their bags and the duo were released after local police intervened.
The airport’s jurisdiction is under North 24 Parganas.
Abhishek denied the allegations and said his wife was not carrying “even two grams of gold”. His complaint with the ECI was primarily aimed at BJP MP Babul Supriyo.
“The circumstances leading to filing of this instant complaint… originates from incidents regarding my client’s wife and her sister’s belonging being identified by the custom authorities ... after which numerous politicians of the Bharatiya Janata Party, including Babul Supriyo, had started spreading rumours and distorted news,” the compliant lodged with the ECI read.
Abhishek is the Trinamul candidate in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat.
The BJP approached the ECI to remove Bidhannagar cops whose names were linked to the controversy.
