The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday decided to showcause Humayun Kabir in the wake of his public attack against a purported clique within the party that allegedly tries to influence Mamata Banerjee’s decision-making and delays Abhishek Banerjee's entry as deputy CM.
Given the party's new rules of disciplinary action, announced on Monday, the 61-year-old MLA could be suspended after getting three such notices.
“I am happy to be show-caused. I will respond to the notice after I receive it. I have said nothing I regret,” said the Bharatpur MLA outside the Assembly on Wednesday.
He again said he thought Abhishek had shown enough acumen to be included in the government to reduce the chief minister’s load ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.
“I have been in active politics since the 1980s.... I have risen from the grassroots, and I am ready to face the consequences,” said Kabir.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, he attacked Calcutta mayor and urban development minister Firhad Hakim and Sreerampur MP Kalyan Banerjee of the old guard, for allegedly resisting Abhishek's further rise and accused them of not being Mamata’s well-wishers.
Kabir is no stranger to controversy. After defecting from the Congress to Mamata’s party in 2013, he was expelled for six years in 2015 under her instructions. Then, Kabir joined the BJP and was fielded by the party from the Murshidabad Lok Sabha seat in 2019, which he lost.
After being allowed to return to TMC after the six-year expulsion, he won from Bharatpur in 2021 and became a vocal Abhishek supporter. A loose cannon, he frequently embarrases the party, sources said.
But this showcause against Kabir is being observed with unusual interest. “This action follows his demands for immediately anointing Abhishek as deputy chief minister with home portfolio (currently with Mamata) and his offensive against her loyalists who allegedly seek to defer it,” said a party MLA.
A member of the MLA disciplinary committee said Kabir had been asked to explain his Tuesday's public remarks within three days. "If he does not, we will take further action based on what they (Mamata and Abhishek) say,” said the member.
Abhishek was busy streamlining TMC's strategy for the winter session of Parliament, where he purportedly conveyed the wish of the supreme leadership against acting as “the Congress rubberstamp”. "TMC wants Parliament to run, and we don't want one issue (bribery charges against Gautam Adani) to disrupt it," said TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.
