Modi government inks Rs 7,628 crore deal with Larsen & Toubro for procurement of artillery guns

The defence ministry has signed a 7,628-crore contract with Larsen &Toubro (L&T) for procurement of 155mm/52 calibre K9 VAJRA-T self-propelled tracked artillery guns for the army.

The K9 VAJRA-T artillery guns, procured under the Buy Indian category, are designed to enhance the army’s firepower and operational readiness. These advanced systems come with high mobility, precision targeting and the ability to deliver long-range lethal firepower even in sub-zero temperatures at high altitudes.

“The procurement of K9 VAJRA-Ts will catalyse artillery modernisation and enhance overall operational readiness of the Indian Army. This versatile artillery gun, with its cross-country mobility, will play a pivotal role in enhancing the firepower of the Indian Army,” the defence ministry said in a statement on Friday.

“The gun being equipped with cutting-edge technology is capable of delivering long-range lethal fires with high accuracy and higher rateof fire and will be able to operate in sub-zero temperatures in high-altitude areas to itsfull potential.”

The contract was signed by senior officials of the ministry and representatives of L&T in the presence of defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on Friday.

Earlier this month, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by defence minister Rajnath Singh had approved five capital acquisition proposals worth 21,772 crore to improve defence preparedness.

These include water jet fast-attack craft, fast interceptor craft, electronic warfare suites, next-generation radar warning receiversand advanced light helicopters for surveillance in thecoastal areas.
