A group of Trinamul workers allegedly heckled Kamalesh Chatterjee, the Congress MLA of Bharatpur in Murshidabad, and thrashed two of his supporters while the Opposition party was conducting a survey in Talebpur gram panchayat on Thursday to know how many migrant workers were yet to return home in the area.
Sabul Sheikh, who was with Chatterjee, was admitted to the Kandi subdivisional with serious injuries.
Chatterjee, who filed an FIR at Salar police station naming two local Trinamul leaders, said he was conducting the survey at the directive of Behrampore MP. “Adhir Chowdhury asked me to compile the list so that we can provide the same to our chief minister,” said Chatterjee.
Sources said the two named in the FIR were Jamshed Sheikh and gram panchayat chief Rabi Sheikh. They allegedly led a group of 50 Trinamul workers to thwart the survey by the Congress.
Ashok Das, vice-president of Trinamul in Murshidabad, said: “It was not a political scuffle but a personal fight between two groups.”
Superintendent of police (Murshidabad), K. Sabari Rajkumar, said they had started an investigation.
