Malda (North) BJP MP Khagen Murmu alleged that he and district BJP president Gobinda Mondal had been shoved by a Trinamul Congress councillor and his supporters at the site of a railway underpass at Malanchapally here on Sunday.

The scuffle was over the “inauguration” of the underpass’s work which began on Sunday. Englishbazar Trinamul MLA Nihar Ghosh inaugurated the work in the presence of local Trinamul councillor Paritosh Mondal and party workers. Ghosh also distributed sweets among those present at the spot.

“The credit of the railway underpass goes to the state government. I had approached the chief minister for the underpass and she immediately helped the railways get the required land,” said Ghosh.

Soon, Murmu and other BJP leaders arrived and said the Trinamul workers and the MLA couldn’t take credit to a central project.

“Trinamul leaders are adept at telling lies. This project is funded by the Centre. The MLA and other Trinamul leaders came here to mislead the people. As an MP, I have got absolute right to inaugurate the project. Local Trinamul councillors had even engaged hooligans against us,” said Murmu.

The scuffle continued and the councillor and his associates virtually tried to push back the MP and the district BJP president from the spot, alleging that the BJP leaders have violated the lockdown.

The situation was brought under control by the Railway Protection Force. The RPF removed the Trinamul workers from the spot and Murmu then broke a coconut on the railway tracks to “inaugurate” the commencement of the work.
