A private airlines' Pokhara-bound plane crashed during takeoff at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) here, killing 18 of the 19 people on board.
The pilot of the Saurya Airlines plane survived the crash and was taken to hospital, officials said. The crash took place when the aircraft veered off the runway and burst into flames.
Footage from the spot showed dramatic scenes of the plane speeding down the runway before a fire broke out with high flames and thick black smoke billowing from the wreckage.
At least 19 people, including aircrew, were aboard the private Saurya Airlines plane which met with the accident at around 11 am, sources said.
The pilot of the aircraft has been taken to a hospital, a security official deployed at the airport told PTI without giving further details. A fire that broke out from the aircraft has been put off, he added. Police and firefighters are carrying out rescue operations at the accident site.
Authorities have shut down the TIA following the plane crash, the MyRepublica news portal reported. Dozens of international and domestic flights have been affected due to the airport closure.
Yeti Airlines 9N-ANC ATR-72, 2023
The crash of a Yeti Airlines aircraft in January, 2023 killed all 72 people on board, including five Indians, in Nepal's resort city of Pokhara was caused by human error, according to an inquiry report submitted to the government.
Yeti Airlines' 9N-ANC ATR-72 aircraft crashed on the bank of the Seti River between the old airport and the new airport minutes before landing on January 15.
Tara Air Flight 197, 2022
On 29 May last year, a Tara Air plane carrying 22 passengers on board, including four Indians, went missing in Nepal’s mountainous Mustang district. The aircraft, a turboprop Twin Otter 9N-AET plane, was flying from Pokhara to Jomsom in central Nepal.
2019 Air Dynasty helicopter crash
On February 27, 2019, an Air Dynasty Eurocopter AS350 B3e carrying six passengers and one pilot was scheduled to fly a domestic chartered flight from Pathibhara Devi Temple in Taplejung to Chuhandanda in Tehrathum, Nepal. The aircraft crashed at approximately 1.30 p.m. (NPT) whilst in bad weather in Taplejung. All seven people on board died in the crash, including Rabindra Prasad Adhikari, Nepal's Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation.
US-Bangla Airlines Flight 211 crash, 2018
On 12 March 2018, a 76-seater Bombardier Q400 of US-Bangla Airlines, a privately-owned Bangladeshi airline, was travelling to Kathmandu from Dhaka. It crashed while landing at the Tribhuvan International Airport. Fifty-one of the 71 people on board were killed.
Tara Air Flight 193, 2016
On 24 February 2016, a Tara Air flight carrying 23 people from Pokhara to Jomsom went missing eight minutes after take-off. Its wreckage was later found in Myagdi, a mountainous district, with no survivors. The crash was reportedly caused by bad weather.
Nepal Airlines Flight 183, 2014
All 18 people on a small plane that crashed in bad weather were killed. The Twin Otter aircraft was operated by state-run Nepal Airlines Corp.
