Four students of Jadavpur University have filed police complaints against Union minister Babul Supriyo for “creating ruckus inside the campus” on Thursday.

The four complaints were lodged with Jadavpur police station on Saturday.

“In the complaints, we have mentioned that the minister had pushed students, hit them and made indecent gestures at them,” said Debraj Debnath, the general secretary of the SFI-backed Arts Faculty Students’ Union of JU.

The students have also asked the police to provide them security as they were feeling “threatened”.

“We have received the complaints,” a police officer said.

Told about the complaints, Supriyo told Metro: “I am wondering what took the Left student leaders so long to lodge a complaint against me. The incident had happened on Thursday. What made them wait till Saturday to lodge the complaints? I understand. They took time to invent what complaints could be filed against someone who had been assaulted by them.”

A complainant said they had wanted to lodge the complaint on Thursday but were scared to do so. “The students who protested against Supriyo on Thursday were identified on social media and BJP leaders threatened to teach us a lesson,” the student said.

At least one complaint mentioned Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh’s comments. The leader had on Friday insinuated that his party would conduct a “Balakot-like surgical strike” on JU to “drive out the communists”.
