How a protest demanding 'justice for Calcutta doctor' led to arson, violence

Calcutta’s streets would rarely have seen so many skirmishes fought at so many places simultaneously, as on August 27.

A march to the West Bengal state secretariat, Nabanna, on August 27, 2024 demanding the resignation of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, over the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor inside Calcutta's state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was interspersed with anger, abuse and vandalism.

The planned 'apolitical' march by two students' organisations began rolling with small gatherings of men and women. But, in no time, the crowd under the banner of Pashchimbanga Chhatra Samaj and Sangrami Joutha Mancha swelled. And triggered lashes between protesters and security forces triggering incidents of violence and spilling of blood. Calcutta’s streets, witness to decades of political violence, would rarely have seen so many skirmishes fought at so many places simultaneously...
