Attacked, abused, assaulted on beef suspicion: How Ashraf Munyar survived a hate crime

On a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Indian Railways will not stop till it becomes a guarantee of comfortable travel for all sections of society, 72-year-old Ashraf Munyar was attacked, abused and assaulted inside a train, purportedly over the suspicion that he was carrying beef. While a pleading Ashraf was not even allowed to get off at his station, the men were given bail in a day’s time after being arrested.

The men hounded Ashraf, cornered him and repeatedly questioned him. They accused the senior citizen of illegally carrying beef in one of the containers and consuming the meat in the ‘holy Hindu month of Shravan’. The men were seen hurling kicks and abuses on him Ashraf while also recording his ordeal.

A preliminary probe revealed that Ashraf was carrying buffalo meat, which is not banned in the state. But both train accidents and hate crimes by cow vigilante groups have become very common in the past few months in India.
