Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his side did not deserve the three points after an equaliser from Michael Obafemi in the sixth minute of stoppage time gave Southampton a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Monday.
United had been 2-1 up after goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in response to Stuart Armstrong’s early opener for the Saints.
Instead of moving into third place, United stay fifth and face a real fight to qualify for the Champions League with a top-four finish.
“You think you have three points in the bag but we probably didn’t deserve three points today,” Solskjaer said.
“It was the worst time to concede a goal but it happens in football. We have won so many games in that way. It is all part of the learning for this team,” he added.
The result has come as a boost for Leicester City whose manager Brendan Rodgers said they are now in a first-class position in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
Leicester suffered a 4-1 loss to relegation-threatened Bournemouth on Sunday but remained in the top four on goal difference after United’s 2-2 draw with Southampton.
With three rounds of fixtures remaining, the battle for the Champions League spots could be settled on the final day of the season when Leicester host United.
“The destiny is always with us, if that’s the case we’re happy to accept the responsibility and pressure,” Rodgers said on Tuesday.
Closer to title
Real Madrid endured their toughest test at Granada on Monday since La Liga restarted but showed real determination to grind out a 2-1 win and record their ninth consecutive victory as they moved within touching distance of reclaiming the title.
Early goals from Ferland Mendy and Karim Benzema were enough to restore a four-point lead over Barcelona and Real will clinch their first league title since 2017 with a win over Villarreal on Thursday or at Leganes on the final day of the season.
