Sunday’s ISL VIII match between Kerala Blasters and Mumbai City FC in Vasco was postponed, as the southern outfit did not have the requisite number of players to field.
The match was scheduled to be played at the Tilak Maidan in Vasco. The tournament — Football Sports Development Limited — did not specify the reason for the postponement but Kerala Blasters are locked in their hotel rooms since Wednesday and did not have any training session.
Prior to this, two matches of ATK Mohun Bagan were postponed after Covid-19 breached the bio-bubble. “The League will look to reschedule the fixture to a later date,” the ISL said in a statement.
On Sunday the organisers had an emergent meeting with the 11 participating teams where it was decided to take case by case. “Most of the teams wanted ISL VIII to be suspended but the league said it would continue and take case by case.
“A senior official, who represented the organisers, said matches should be put on hold from a football perspective but the medical committee and another official did not agree to his views,” a source said.
Another source said the organisers have no other option but to continue because fixture congestion will put the league in doubt. “The IPL is expected to start in mid-March and the broadcasters would be hard-pressed if the ISL continue beyond the second week of March,” he said.
Jamshedpur FC, who have a few cases of Covid-19, are scheduled to play Hyderabad FC in Bambolim on Monday.
