Michy Batshuayi’s diving header in the first half was enough for Belgium to secure a first ever victory in Poland with a 1-0 success. Batshuayi stooped to steer Youri Tielemans’ excellent cross into the net on 16 minutes to ensure Belgium scored for a 48th consecutive match, an incredible record dating back to a 0-1 loss to France at the 2018 World Cup.
Coach Roberto Martinez’s side stay in contention for top spot in Group 4 as they trail leaders Netherlands by three points with two rounds remaining. Lively forward Noa Lang scored his first international goal and Memphis Depay got a last-gasp winner as Netherlands secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Wales.
After Lang had opened the scoring, Cody Gakpo added a second for the home side before Brennan Johnson pulled a goal back for the visitors.
That was the way it stayed until Gareth Bale netted a 92nd-minute penalty which looked to have secured a point for the Welsh, but Depay still had time to score the winner.
Ukraine draw
Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Ukraine after Nathan Collins’s spectacular solo strike in the first half was cancelled out following a collective defensive lapse by the Irish team in the second half of the match. The result moves Ukraine to the top of League B, Group One with seven points from three games.
