Users will be able to come up with customised versions of ChatGPT, the maker of the tool OpenAI said at its first Developer Day conference in San Francisco. The customisable versions of ChatGPT is called “GPTs”, which the company says will be able to comply with specified instructions and have access to user-provided information. These GPTs can be made without any coding skills and will help with specific problems or interests, like helping someone learn the rules of a board game or teach kids math.

In the coming weeks, GPTs will be accessible through the GPT Store. At the moment, details about the store are sketchy though OpenAI is promising to eventually pay creators an unspecified amount based on how much their GPTs are used. The new tool will be available to paying ChatGPT Plus subscribers and OpenAI enterprise customers.

“GPTs are a new way for anyone to create a tailored version of ChatGPT to be more helpful in their daily life, at specific tasks, at work, or at home — and then share that creation with others,” OpenAI said in its blog.

To create a custom bot, a user needs to specify, by talking with ChatGPT, what they would like the bot to do. Next, ChatGPT will write the code behind the scenes and then run the new bot. These bots can plug into other sites and services to do things like access databases, search emails, and automate ecommerce orders. OpenAI says some companies, like payments processor Square, are already building and using GPTs internally. According to Gartner, by 2026, generative design AI will automate 60 per cent of the design effort for new websites and mobile apps.

“You can build a GPT — a customised version of ChatGPT — for almost anything. Because they combine instructions, expanded knowledge, and actions, they can be more helpful to you,” said Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, at the event.

Further, the company announced that more than two million developers and over 92 per cent of Fortune 500 companies are using its APIs that offer access to ChatGPT or the underlying text- and image-generating technology in some way. OpenAI says ChatGPT now has around 100 million weekly active users.

The march of AI has made Collins Dictionary call the term the “word” of the year. To tackle ChatGPT, Google and other Big Tech companies have started focusing more on building similar AI tools while governments are trying to come up with policies to mitigating misuse of powerful models. OpenAI has also announced GPT-4 Turbo, a new model that has knowledge of world events up to April 2023 and it can fit the equivalent of over 300 pages of text in a single prompt.
