Apple has approved Epic Games’ games marketplace app on iPhones and iPads in Europe after the “Fortnite” maker accused the Cupertino HQ-ed company of hindering its efforts to set up a games store on the devices. The Tim Cook-led company has said the argument was around the Epic Sweden AB Marketplace and has nothing to do with the video games maker’s Fortnite app which has already been given a go-ahead.
The Epic Games Store is a virtual storefront for consumers to purchase various games, including Fortnite. Epic Games has been in a battle with Apple and Google for a long time because it thinks these companies unfairly take large cuts of revenue from various applications that have few additional options. In June, an EU commission said that it would be opening an investigation into Apple for noncompliance of the DMA over concerns about the Apple App Store.
Under the DMA’s new rules, Apple is required to allow third-party app stores on the iPhone as the tech giant was deemed a “gatekeeper” under EU law.
