Lymphoma, a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, is often referred to as a silent disease. It quietly impacts the immune system, making early detection and awareness essential. With growing numbers of cases worldwide, understanding lymphoma is crucial to raising public consciousness about this often overlooked cancer.

They make swellings in different parts of your body neck, armpits & groin. They are usually painless and gradually increase in size. There may be unexplained weight loss and night sweats. Mr Bhabendranath Halder 71 year old gentleman saw some small reddish swellings over his right foot. It was near his sole and was slowly increasing in size causing difficulty in walking. Soon few other tiny swellings appeared on his inner thigh and also few nodular swellings in his groin area. They were not painful or itchy but had some discharge coming from it and forming a crust over it. Mr. Halder consulted Dr. Shazia Gulshan Clinical Hematologist of Peerless Hospital . After undergoing a series of tests, including a biopsy, Mr.Haldar was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL), a type of aggressive cancer of the blood which is restricted to lymph nodes in our body.

The tumor was removed surgically and as it was a large one. Upon it plastic surgery was also needed to cover the gaping wound.

Dr.Gulshan advised chemo-immunotherapy and he started responding from a month later. Initially he came to the hospital in a wheelchair. In between he developed some infection of the foot which was cured with antibiotics. “The excitement on his face was visible when he could walk into my OPD after his treatment. PET CT scan was done to see the status of his disease and response to chemo-immunotherapy. It showed complete remission which means that he is cured of lymphoma” said Dr.Gulshan

Lymphoma is a blood cancer limited to the lymph bodes of our body. Lymph nodes form a important part of our immune system and therefore compromises our immunity. There are 2 types of lymphoma, Hodgkin’s (HL) & Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL). HL is seen more commonly in children and young adults & NHL in adults. Most of the lymphomas are treatable and curable.

Diagnosis at an earlier stage gives a high cure rate. Awareness about the symptoms and consulting your hematologist early can give you a potentially disease free life.

Raising awareness about lymphoma can lead to earlier detection, more effective treatments, and better outcomes for patients. “Regular health check-ups and understanding personal risk factors are important steps everyone can take toward reducing their risk. The fight against lymphoma require both scientific advancements and public awareness. By staying informed and supporting ongoing research, we can make strides in battling this disease and providing hope for those affected” added Dr.Shazia Gulshan.
